FSI Learning Explorations – Sexual Health

September 27, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm PDT

SESSION INFO:

Join us on September 27th for  Sexual Health  with Rachel Skidmore and Shelley Nessman

“Let’s talk about sexuality” – this phrase offers up a wide range of possibilities – along with a host of anxieties. As a parent of a child with a disability, this is dreaded while at the same time recognized as an important part of parenting and of your child’s life. This workshop provides an opportunity for parents, in a supportive setting, to explore some of their fears and anxieties and curiosities in a safe environment. This is to begin the courageous conversation around ensuring that individuals being supported – are not only safe from sexual exploitation but also have the correct support and information to embrace that part of who they are and how they interact in relationships with others. In this workshop you will learn how to approach the topic of sexuality and relationships.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn different ways in which you can find current information about sexuality and health and feel comfortable discussing sexuality
  • Examine your personal beliefs and values of sexuality and critically consider what you are/are not able to discuss with your family member yourself.
  • Promote relationship developing skills and perspectives with your family member
  • Demonstrate tangible take away tips

Rachel Skidmore is a mother of two unbelievable daughters. They teach her every day things that she did not know. The topic of sexuality and sexual health has always been important to her, and the importance of it grew when she found out she was going to have daughters of her own. It then grew exponentially when Rachel discovered her youngest daughter was going to be in the highest vulnerability category. She has had the honour of sharing this presentation with families, self advocates, and with service providers whilst engaging in dialogue with people about why it is so important we break down the taboo of discussing sexuality and sexual health. Watching each family follow their own path because, sex, sexual health, gender are ingrained into our family values and each family presents it in their own unique way to their family member.

Shelley Nessman has spent 40+ years focussing on the ways that person-centred work and planning can support the creation of good lives for all people. She maintains that her work has been influenced heavily by many mentors including those people with disabilities that she has shared her life and home, and by families who have lovingly supported her learning. Shelley has been working internationally training facilitators to work in a person-centred way using exemplary tools like PATH. She is passionate about good facilitation and believes that when we practice working in a facilitative way, everyone wins! Shelley’s favourite quote at the moment is “Whatever the problem – Community is the answer” (Margaret Wheately)
