SUMMARY:Navigating Education Series: Competency-based IEPs
DESCRIPTION:In this second session of our series on Navigating Education in the BC K-12 system\, Veena Birring Hayer from Provincial Outreach Program for Autism & Related Disorders (POPARD) will explain what Competency-based IEPs are and how to create them to reflect your child’s strengths and support needs. \nThe Individual Education Plan (IEP) is a cornerstone of inclusive education\, supporting students with disabilities and diverse learning needs across British Columbia. This workshop offers a clear and practical introduction to the Competency-Based Individual Education Plan (CB-IEP)\, an approach grounded in inclusion\, student voice\, and responsive\, strengths-based planning. \nParticipants will deepen their understanding of how CB-IEPs align with BC’s redesigned curriculum and reflect a shift toward meaningful\, individualized learning goals that honour each student’s unique abilities and lived experience. \nThis workshop will include: \n\n\n\nA brief overview of BC’s redesigned curriculum as related to competency-based IEPs\nAn exploration of the evolution of IEP frameworks across BC school districts and the rationale for the current competency-based approach\nClarification of the roles and shared responsibilities of school teams\, parents/caregivers\, and students in CB-IEP development\nPractical strategies and resources to support meaningful parent/caregiver engagement in IEP planning\nA walk-through example of developing a Competency-Based IEP from start to finish\n\n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \nFamily Support Institute of BC (FSI) is a provincial not-for-profit society committed to supporting families who have a family member with a disability.
