SUMMARY:Photography and Disability
DESCRIPTION:Disabled Community Connection Network (DCCN) is a monthly communication and information group for people of all ages (16+) with any disability. This group is hosted by the North Shore Disability Resource Centre. This group is facilitated by and for people with disabilities. \nThe next group is Thursday\, March 17th “Photography and Disability” with Darrell Hyatt.  \nASL Interpretation is provided! \nDarrell Hyatt’s Bio: As a teen\, I was fascinated by my uncle’s collection of cameras. However\, my limited hand function caused by cerebral palsy and the expense of developing film to have only one or two photos turn out precluded me from exploring my interest. I pursued my other passion: computers. A self-proclaimed geek\, I spent 40+ years in the computer field – as a programmer\, instructor and technology specialist. My two interests collided when digital cameras came along. I dove into learning all I could about this new technology; reading online articles and watching videos. \n  \nPlease Email L.Stinson@nsdrc.org or call 604-985-5371 to register and for the Zoom login information

Once the direction is set\, supports and resources can be identified. \nMarch 30 Session: Thinking about a person centered plan for your loved one? Confused about what process might be the best choice? Wondering about how to find someone to help facilitate a plan? We will spend this evening talking about the different ways to do a person centered plan and just what we mean when we say “person centered”. Joining us will be some people who have had a plan done who will share their experiences!   \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  SESSION SCHEDULE • Mar 2 – All about WayFinders. Meet the WayFinders • Mar 16 – WayFinders Compass • Mar 30 – If I had a Hammer – Tools for Person Centered Planning • April 13 – School/IEP • April 27 – Mind your IEPs and Qs! • May 11 – Post secondary Education Panel • May 25 – Get to Work with Annette Burrows • June 8 – Circle of Friends/Relationships • June 22 – PLAN for the Future!   \n  \nMeet your WayFinders: \n \nShelley Nessman | Fraser Valley Chapter Shelley Nessman has been working in the Social Justice field for over forty years with a particular interest in person centered work and planning. She is a Resource Family Member with Family Support Institute and makes her home in Steveston where she lives with her daughter\, son-in- law and two ginger cats. \n  \n \nRachel Goddyn | Burnaby Chapter Rachel has been volunteering and working in the Community Living movement since her son\, Leslie\, was diagnosed with a rare disability. Leslie\, now 39\, has a life filled with meaningful activities and relationships. Rachel shares part of Leslie’s story…..”At a recent celebration\, Leslie sat with two of his friends from high school. As I watched them enjoying each others company\, I reflected on how much they have learned in the 19 years since Leslie graduated. They are\, all three\, much more mature and capable. All young people develop through out their twenties\, but for individuals with disabilities\, this development can be extraordinary. The transition to adulthood is often the start of a period of tremendous learning.” Rachel aspires to help families and individuals who are in the midst of this transition overcome obstacles and find their way to a meaningful life.   \n \nRachel Skidmore | Victoria Chapter Rachel Skidmore is a mother of two teen girls\, one of whom has neuro and physical diversity. Rachel has a passion for inclusion and believes strongly that employment and community are crucial in ensuring people with Diversity are included in society.  So much so that employment goals have been a part of her daughters IEP’s since kindergarten. Everyone has a gift to share with people\, something they can receive monetary gain with\, even if it is just a few hours a week. \n  \n \nGord Robertson | Prince George Chapter Gord lives in Prince George with his wife Terry and adult daughter Bree-Anna\, who lives with multiple disabilities. Gord has been a resource parent with the FSI since 2004\, and has spent countless hours helping families navigate their way through many different disability related topics and issues. He and Terry\, together with Bree and her extended family\, first developed a vision for Bree’s life when she was 2 1/2\, and have worked to continually evolve that vision to change with her as her needs\, wants\, and desires changed over her 33 years\, allowing her to lead a great life\, rich in relationships\, experiences and contribution. Through his connections with FSI\, Vela Microboard Association\, and Community Living BC as the chair of the North Region Community Council\, Gord is well informed about the world of adults living with disabilities in BC.\n \n \n \nBen Postmus | Kootenays Chapter\n\nI have been a Resource Parent with Family Support Institute for 28 years. SUMMARY:FASD Series: The Power of Relationship
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\nJoin Paul Thompson and Glenda Jansen as they candidly share their lived experience; that of an individual who navigated homelessness from the age of 16 for thirty years with an undiagnosed disability (FASD)\, and that of the person who came into his life with unexpected advocacy and support. Resiliency\, the power of relationship and connection are woven throughout Paul and Glenda’s back-and-forth style presentation as they combine facts with story\, humour and love through tumultuous times. Listeners will leave with a sense of hope\, and the understanding that it is never too late for diagnosis or a new beginning! This promises to be an evening of laughter and learning for all. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \nPaul Thompson lived for more than 40 years with the undiagnosed effects of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder\, of which 30 were spent on the streets or incarcerated. He also experienced severe childhood trauma which affected many areas of his life. In 2009 Paul’s life turned around with unexpected advocacy and support; he willingly walked through the open doors and hasn’t looked back. Paul exemplifies why it’s never too late for a life to change. \nGlenda Jansen worked with individuals who have special needs before she retired; as a care aide for three years\, and then as a special education assistant at an independent school for fifteen. Glenda is passionate about FASD and believes relationship is key to success. In 2009 Glenda and her husband\, Pete\, met Paul at a Sunday dinner outreach to the homeless\, and a couple months later he moved into their home and they were instrumental to Paul’s life turning around. People often ask Glenda “Why Paul?” As they share their life experiences you’ll understand why! \n  \nFamily Support Institute of BC (FSI) is a provincial not-for-profit society committed to supporting families who have a family member with a disability.\nFSI is unique in Canada and the only grass roots family to family organization that has a broad volunteer base. \nFSI SUPPORTS AND SERVICES ARE FREE TO ANY FAMILY \nYou are invited to join FSI CONTINUING CONVERSATIONS\, a private Facebook Group intended to continue conversations of support or provide an alternative platform for support. www.facebook.com/groups/fsicontinuingconversations/ \nAll FSI Zoom sessions can be accessed by telephone only if access to computers and/or internet is a barrier. She is a Resource Family Member with Family Support Institute and makes her home in Steveston where she lives with her daughter\, son-in- law and two ginger cats.    \n  \nRachel Goddyn | Burnaby Chapter Rachel has been volunteering and working in the Community Living movement since her son\, Leslie\, was diagnosed with a rare disability.
