SUMMARY:Let's Talk About SIB | Session 02: Safety: Equipment or Medication?
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nAbout this Session:\nJoin us for a session on the use of protective equipment and medication for safety in children displaying self-injurious behaviour (SIB). We will briefly discuss the general approach to assessing and managing SIB\, at what point parents might consider using protective equipment and medications\, and best practices when using these safety tools. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT\n  \nWhat is Self-Injurious Behaviour (SIB)?\nSelf-Injurious behaviour can be defined as: self-directed injury that is non-suicidal in nature and causes physical trauma. These isolating behaviours may affect children with intellectual impairment\, autism or other forms of neurodiversity. SIB is a multifaceted behaviour that is difficult to understand and treat as the diagnosis varies across individuals. Currently\, proper evidence-based care does not exist\, so it can be extremely challenging to care for children with severe SIB. \nAre you a parent/primary caregiver of a person with Self Injurious Behaviours? Are you passionate about taking your learning to the next level? As a parent/primary caregiver do you want to learn more on how to support yourself and your child? We are bringing to you a unique 6-part series to learn and explore ways to support families and their children. These six sessions are meant to promote education around severe SIB\, to create a supportive SIB community\, as well as to advocate for better health outcomes. \nYou Can Participate in Any of These Ways:\n\nPre-watch any of the 6 series pre-recorded workshops\nPre-watch any of the 6 series pre-recorded workshops then join on event night and participate in our live and interactive Q & A\nJoin us on event night to watch the pre-recorded workshops together followed by our live and interactive Q & A\nJoin the monthly SIB Family Hangout hosted by FSI the last Monday of every month\n\nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON ALL OF THE SESSIONS AND TO VIEW PRE-RECORDED WORKSHOPS

SUMMARY:Creating a Common Approach and Language to Supporting Self-Regulation in Children and Adults in their Lives
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nStress makes it difficult for the brain to work as well as it does when calm\, happy\, and relaxed. When someone experiences stress\, it causes ‘alarms’ in the different parts of the brain. \nMy Curious Brain was written to spark children’s curiosity about how their brain works. It also provides parents\, teachers\, and caregivers with tools to support brain health for children. The different parts of the brain are represented by the Instinctual Dinosaur\, the Emotional Monkey\, and the Wise Owl. The story offers children and adults a fun and interesting way to gain a greater understanding of how the brain develops\, how it responds to stress\, and strategies to effectively reduce stress. \nMy Curious Brain shows how to practice calming the instinctual dinosaur and the emotional monkey\, to help access the wise owl. This book offers self-regulation awareness and skills to help all the animals (parts of the brain) work in harmony. These are skills that will benefit children through their entire lives. \nAll participants will receive a copy of the My Curious Brain book. \nClick here for information on how to register\nAbout the Facilitator  \nConnie Herman is the Nobody’s Perfect Parent Program Coordinator for Saskatchewan. In this role\, she offers training\, ongoing education\, and support to service providers who work with parents and families. Connie is also a mom of a 7 year-old daughter and a 12 year-old son. SUMMARY:Personal Support Network Facilitation - Online Course | Nov 1 - Dec 12\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:Ending isolation through personal support networks\nAbout the Course\nFinding friendship and making personal connections in one’s community can present challenges for us all under the most robust of conditions; for those who are isolated due to disability\, illness or old age\, developing a personal support network can seem insurmountable.  At the heart of Plan Institute is the belief that in creating a caring community with the knowledgeable assistance of a Network Facilitator\, a person in isolation can have an active social network playing an important role in bringing resilience\, purpose and joy to an otherwise solitary life. \nBuilding on over 25 years of experience in facilitating hundreds of personal support networks for people living in isolation\, this online course uses PLAN’s proven approach to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a Personal Support Network Facilitator. As a Network Facilitator\, you will have the tools to re-chart a life of isolation towards a life at the centre of an active and caring personal support network. \nThis course was designed by Vickie Cammack\, Plan Institute and PLAN co-founder\, and the Plan Institute team. \nThis course consists of four easy to follow modules that are designed to be both practical and inspirational:\n\nUnderstanding Personal Support Network facilitation\nExploration in developing a Personal Support Network\nFormation and maintenance of a network\nAddressing challenges and building confidence\n\nThe 25 – 30 hours of course instruction includes:\n\nComprehensive\, accessible\, self-paced\, online training.
