SUMMARY:Understanding our Cities

I have a lot to learn\, and I am hoping you will join me! We will be asking things like: \n-What are the things available to make our city better? \n-People talk about accessibility but what does it mean to city planners? \n-How can we get involved in planning? \n\n\n\n\nFor this event\, you’ll need a phone\, tablet or laptop and the zoom app and proof that you found the clue. \n  \nCLICK TO JOIN MEETING

SUMMARY:Ask an Expert: Beyond the RDSP
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\n“Ask an Expert – Beyond the RDSP: Financial Planning for People with Disabilities”\, will feature a speaker from Plan Institute\, Disability Alliance BC\, the BC Aboriginal Network on Disability Society\, and Disability Without Poverty. We will be discussing the Canada Disability Benefit\, the Disability Tax Credit\, other disability related Income/Tax Benefits\, the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)\, Income Assistance\, and other financial planning considerations. \nThis event will be live-streamed on Plan Institute’s Facebook page and will be recorded privately for registrants only. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \nWe encourage you to check out our web page on RDSP Awareness Month which features several resources and social media post templates at the following link: https://www.rdsp.com/rdsp-awareness-month/ \n  \nMore information about RDSP Awareness Month:  \nIn 2014\, the government of BC declared October RDSP Awareness Month to help raise awareness about the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). The RDSP is the world’s first savings plan specifically designed for people with disabilities. Even with little to no personal contributions\, there are significant government contributions available to help many Canadians with disabilities to save for their future. \nWe believe that everyone should be talking about the RDSP\, but unfortunately\, we know this isn’t the case. Even with the financial security that it can provide\, many people who qualify still don’t have an RDSP. Many Canadians know about or take advantage of RRSPs or RESPs\, but far fewer people know about the RDSP. \nOnly about 31% of people who are approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) and are aged 0-49 have opened an RDSP (49 is the cutoff for opening an RDSP and being able to receive government contributions). Being approved for the DTC is the most important thing to have before you can open an RDSP. \nIf you or someone you know has a disability\, we encourage you to find out more. Contact your financial institution\, our website\, or Access RDSP for more information. \n  \nMore information about the Access RDSP partnership:  \nAccess RDSP is a partnership between Plan Institute\, BC Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS) and Disability Alliance BC (DABC). The purpose of the program is to increase uptake of the RDSP by helping people learn about\, become eligible for and open an account. We provide support and resources for every step of the way. BCANDS provides one-on-one direct service for Indigenous peoples. All our services are free! \nThe RDSP is a great resource for those it benefits\, yet many still face barriers trying to access it. For example\, a doctor can charge a fee for filling out a DTC application. We continue to advocate for positive changes that will make the RDSP more accessible.

SUMMARY:FASD Themed Series: The Foster Family Coalition of the NWT
DESCRIPTION:Please join Tammy Roberts\, Leesa Myers and Sandra Noel from The Foster Family Coalition of the NWT to discuss the 4Y and 4Y Justice Programs.  The 4Y Program began in June 2019 due to the apparent need for direct support for young people with PAE and FASD as they transition into adulthood. \nIn Yellowknife\, the 4Y Program complements other community programs and services available to support the youth participants\, therefore contributing to a higher quality of care in the city. It also supports caregivers and others in the youth’s social network\, which improves the capacity for care. This is done by providing a Navigator to spend 4 hours a week with the youth to encourage improved physical and mental health\, improved self-confidence and self-determination\, more community involvement in the transition planning of the youth in the community and prevention and reduction of additional challenges such as mental health issues\, addictions\, police involvement\, and self-harm. The 4Y Program provides 8 hours a week with a Navigator to youth involved in the justice system. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \nTammy Roberts has been the Executive Director of the Foster Family Coalition of the Northwest Territories since 2009 and in this position facilitates PRIDE Training and provides support to foster and adoptive parents and child protection workers across the territory. She also is the secretary of the Canadian Foster Family Association\, participates on the National Executive Director’s Working Group and is the Co-chair of the CanFASD Research Network Family Advisory Committee. \nSandra Noel is the Director of the Northwest Territories on the board of Youth in Care Canada. She works with directors from other provinces and territories to improve the lives of all youth in care. SUMMARY:Radical Care | In Person
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\nJoin a Radical Care Space\, in person! Come by to make something with clay and share stories with others. Hosted at Alternatives Gallery (1659 Venables St) by community-based artist\, Aaniya Asrani. \nYou are invited to join a co-creation space that is designed to contemplate notions of care. The process involves unwrapping a ‘care package’ of clay to make something for someone you care about\, care for\, or even an object that embodies care to you\, as we share stories with one another and watch the space evolve with every new person that enters it. \nThe space is wheelchair accessible. There might be some smells\, loud noises and groups of people having conversation. You will be touching and working with clay\, which can get a bit messy. \nWe will slow down and be present with one another in this space created for dialogue\, exchange and reflection – at Alternatives Gallery (1659 Venables St) \n  \nCLICK HERE TO JOIN THE EXPERIENCE
