SUMMARY:Creative Art Club | In Person
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nEach week participants will be given the space to create art works. The studio will provide 2-3 prompts and examples to spark inspiration. Or participants can use the space freely to make something of their own. Making art in a space with others often provides an opportunity to learn from one another\, socialize and inspire. \nPay what you can supply fee – suggested $5.00 that will cover the cost of all supplies provided. The studio can supply most things: pencils\, paper\, paints\, brushes\, markers\, glue… I would recommend bringing a snack and a water bottle Your own art supplies if you would like not to share and use familiar items. In particular an eraser and pencil \nThis experience takes place in Arrieta Art Studio located at 707 Front St\, New Westminster. The studio is only a 5 minutes walk from the New West Skytrain station. There is paid street parking in the area. The studio is located in the core of downtown New West where there is construction and trains so the front area of the studio is noisy. However\, the experience will take place in our backroom which is quieter as street sounds are rarely heard. The space is brightly lit to allow for better art-making. Strong smells could come from art supplies like paints\, glue\, etc. \nThe studio is ground-level and wheelchair accessible. There is no wheelchair-accessible washroom\, unfortunately. Please inform us if there is anything we can do to make the space or art-making more accessible \n  \nJOIN THE EXPERIENCE

SUMMARY:Ask a Dude
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\nGuys with cognitive disabilities get together to talk about dating\, love\, relationships\, and sex with a Certified Sexual Health Educator. \nEverybody has questions about dating\, love\, relationships\, and sex. Things like: How do I meet a boyfriend / girlfriend / partner? How do I let my family know that I want to date? How can I make sex safer? What is consent? It’s totally normal. But sometimes it can be hard to know where to get good information. At this event\, we’ll watch some Real Talk videos\, and have a conversation hosted by a Certified Sexual Health Educator. We’ll talk about where to get good information\, who can support us with this stuff\, and how to figure out confusing situations. People are welcome to talk about things\, or to just listen if they don’t want to talk. If you want a family member\, friend\, or staff member to support you to tune in to the Zoom Hangout\, that’s great. They don’t need to register\, they can just show up with you. \nPlease note: The maximum number of attendees at a Real Talk Zoom Hangout is 12. We do this so that everyone has a chance to participate and share ideas if they want to. If you try to register someone and the event is full – don’t worry\, we’ll be running these frequently while Social Distancing is in effect. \nIf you have an event link from signing up one person please DON’T pass it on to others who have not registered. This will keep the event more confidential and more useful for everyone. \n  \nJOIN THE EXPERIENCE

SUMMARY:Exploring Sensory Processing: An interactive workshop at TWO
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Interactive Family Workshop with Olivia Hoffsuemmer (Occupational Therapist) \nThis workshop will explore Sensory Processing. \nBring your child with you to play & learn together in an interactive session which will give you some ideas on how your child may benefit from exploring their senses & how to  continue to develop these ideas together at home. \nChildren use their senses during all their first experiences to help them make sense of the world. Olivia will support you to understand how your senses help you do this. You will learn about the benefits of multisensory play; such as using sensory bins. You will discover how these can stimulate our senses\, promote emotional regulation\, and develop fine motor skills. Olivia will then show you how to create your own personalised sensory bin with your little ones\, so that you can incorporate all you have learnt to see\, touch\, smell\, and hear the benefits of sensory play for yourself. \nThis workshop is ideally suited to a parent & child aged 3-6.\nTo get the most from this workshop\, we recommend that parents & children actively work & play together. \nPlease register to confirm your attendance \nThere are limited tickets available. If this workshop becomes full\, you will be added to our waitlist & an additional date will be scheduled. \nThere is no childcare for this event\, please make arrangements if you can not bring your child with you. \n  \nCLICK TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Latest Updates on the Canada Disability Benefit
DESCRIPTION:Join Disability Without Poverty to get the latest scoop on the Canada Disability Benefit. We want to update you on where’s the bill. You’ll find out the current status of Bill C22\, the question of budgeting for the benefit\, and an update from DWP. \nJoin us on Zoom Tuesday\, April 4\, 2023 from 9-10am PT/12-1pm ET \nASL\, LSQ\, English & French closed captioning\, as well as Simultaneous French translation will be provided. \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \n#WheresTheBill? \nBill C-22 finished Second reading on March 9. It is now with the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs\, Science and Technology (SOCI)\, with public hearings scheduled from March 22 onwards. \nOnce the committee has done their work\, a report is made. If the Senate does not propose any amendments\, the bill moves onto Third Reading. \nIf the Senate proposes amendments\, the bill is sent back to the House of Commons to debate these new amendments. \nThe risk with amendments in the Senate is that the House of Commons can vote to defeat the bill\, and Bill C-22 would be no more.

SUMMARY:BC’s Institutional Legacy and the Emergence of the Community Living Movement
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\nCurrent services and supports for people with an intellectual disability have emerged from a long and complicated history of fear and oppression\, charitable beliefs\, pseudo-science\, human rights and economic priorities that date back hundreds and even thousands of years. \nBeginning almost 200 years ago\, across Canada\, and later in British Columbia\, the institutional model was originally considered a progressive and compassionate response to meeting the needs of people with disabilities. Despite the failure of institutions in meeting people’s needs\, the model has persisted\, and people continue to be institutionalized in several provinces. The closure of large institutions in BC in the 1990s was achieved through the perseverance and sustained advocacy organized by family members\, service providers\, allies in government and especially\, people with disabilities themselves. Continuing our conversations about the history\, values\, and beliefs that guide the movement is vital to sustaining ourselves – and the vision of community living for all. \nThis two-hour session explores the roots and history of institutionalization of people with disabilities and the emergence of the community living movement in BC and Canada and the perspectives of survivor-activists who have fought and continue to fight for justice for people forced to live in institutions\, past and present.
