SUMMARY:Reactive Behaviours
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\nSometimes our loved ones communicate their needs in ways that are hard to understand — through what we often call “reactive behaviors” or behaviors that challenge us. These might stem from things like sensory overload\, limited language\, anxiety\, or other unmet needs. \nAs caregivers\, it can feel overwhelming — but you’re not alone. Join our bi-weekly Family Hangout where caregivers come together to share experiences\, support one another\, and explore tools and strategies that others have found helpful. These conversations are rooted in the belief that all behaviour has meaning and that\, as trusted adults\, we can model self-regulation\, adapt our environments\, and work toward meeting the needs behind the behaviour. \nThis call now brings together families from two former groups — Complex Behaviours and Non-Speaking Autism. We welcome all who are navigating this journey and want to learn and connect in a supportive\, non-judgmental space. Let’s come together\, listen\, share\, and build a more inclusive and compassionate path forward — one where everyone’s needs are understood and valued. \n  \nCLICK TO REGISTER\n  \nFamily Support Institute of BC (FSI) is a provincial not-for-profit society committed to supporting families who have a family member with a disability. SUMMARY:Soft Skills and Creating Employment Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:What ’soft skills’ can be highlighted to add to a personal skill set to create dynamics for relationships\, jobs and self-pride? \n\n\n\n\nPresentation: \nThe presentation will include steps towards growth in areas of self-awareness\, building and sustaining relationships\, navigating the environment\, making personal choices and advocacy skills. We hope this presentation provides a variety of ideas for parents\, stakeholders and educators. We have gained a better understanding that supporting and teaching realistic skills that promote self-determination and ‘grit’ from a young age may produce and create more positive experiences for learners. while respecting the autonomy and dignity of autistic individuals. Part of this discussion will focus on the aspect that helping people get a job is only the first step; it is also about learning how to keep a job. \nThe idea of having connections/connectivity to one’s learning can enhance a participant’s productivity\, helping them become a more active learner and engage in their personal education and growth. There is a big difference between memorizing skills and conceptualizing and using them in your daily life. These days\, the buzzword is ‘independence’; however\, that can be interpreted in many ways. Let us discuss what that may mean to individuals\, both positively and with a cautionary tone. \nThe age range of this discussion will highlight early elementary to later elementary years. We look forward to a healthy and energetic discussion and questions from our audience that pertain to general strategies. \nGuest Speaker: \nBohdanna Popowycz\, M.Ed BCBA LBA \nBohdanna has been working in the field of autism and unique learners since the late 80’s. Prior to that\, while attending University she worked in group homes with adults ranging in ages from 19-70. This\, and her work with early learners\, has given her the ability to understand learning through the ages. Bohdanna has worked and trained in the United States\, Canada and the UK. She was integral in starting the charity Harmony House CARES (Centre for Autism and Research and Education Society) in 2006 along with two parent advocates. She lives on the Coast and continues to travel to Vancouver\, as well as the USA to work alongside families\, individuals and schools. Bohdanna enjoys speaking at conferences and creating relationships with educators in workshops and focus groups. Her main source of pride and love is her three children. \n  \n\nREGISTER HERE

Jenn is one of the founding co-creators of BCEdAccess’ Exclusion Tracker\, which is for parents to report when their disabled children are denied an equitable education\, and one of the founding co-creators of the Parents & Professionals Plan\, which is advocating at the Provincial level to expand and reform the Individualized Funding program for disabled youth. She is particularly passionate about the different legal protections and services between the two countries and the implications for the long-term prospects of Canadian children. Her current focus is parents with newly-diagnosed children\, and has made it a personal goal to “meet these parents where they are at”\, connect and educate them on their rights. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Aging Caregivers - with Guest Speaker from the Alzheimer Society of BC/Yukon

As we get older\, our ability to care for our family member becomes more and more difficult. Planning our own future\, and the future of our loved ones can be a terrifying process. Will we be able to provide the necessary care? Will they be well cared for in the future\, after we are gone? What can we do to make the future easier? Connecting with other families in similar situations is the best way to problem solve and figure out what will work best for our specific situations. Join our call with other “mature” parents and caregivers and we can problem solve together! \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \nAbout the speaker and session:\nLife carries on! We are all aging with every second of each day! It is difficult to predict how we will age until it actually happens. This is especially true for our loved ones with differing abilities. She has presented information and education sessions both virtually and in person to doctors\, health care professionals\, family caregivers\, and people living with dementia. \nThousands of people in the community have benefitted from her personal experience as a caregiver\, plus her long years of experience supporting and educating families and health care professionals.
