SUMMARY:One Day Community Picnic
DESCRIPTION:One Day is a family & community event that takes place each September as Victoria’s “Kick Off to Community Living Month.” \nOne Day is a community event organized by community organizations that work with children\, youth and adults with intellectual disabilities. The purpose of One Day is to celebrate the diversity in our community through the planning of a free\, family-oriented celebration of everyone – for everyone – in our community. Our planning committee works hard to encourage the community at large to attend in the hope that through celebrating our similarities\, we can break down the barriers that often result in social isolation for some. One Day provides free musical entertainment\, BBQ lunch and refreshments\, organized games and activities that anyone can participate in\, FREE children’s activities\, bouncies\, face painting\, prizes and special guests. We also provide a Village Market where crafts people and artists\, some of whom have a disability\, can sell their wares. In 2015\, 1\,000 community members attended One Day. \n  \nThis 11th One Day will look a little bit different than past events due to changes being implemented that support COVID-19 health and safety for everyone\, but attendees can expect our usual stage packed full of performers and music\, special guests\, children’s activities\, community\, and fun! \n  \nFor more information on this event click here\n  \ninfo@beconsupport.ca

SUMMARY:Plagued to Death by Systemic Ableism: What the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Expansion of Eligibility for MAiD Reveal About the Lethal Dangers of Systemic Ableism in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a talk by Dr. Heidi Janz on systemic ableism in Canada. \nAbstract: 2020 and the advent of COVID-19 ushered in a time of new peril for disabled people in Canada. Government and public health officials repeated their daily mantra: “We’re all in this together\,” while at the same time creating policies and legislation which made it clear that disabled Canadians are not part of the “we.” Provinces quietly developed Critical Care Triage Protocols which would prohibit many disabled people from receiving critical care in the event that a surge in severe COVID cases outstripped available resources\, and at the national level\, government pushed through an expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) despite overwhelming opposition from major disability rights organizations\, scholars\, activists and the United Nations. \nDrawing on my research and experience as a disability ethics educator and advocate\, I will demonstrate that both Canada’s COVID-19 response and its expansion of eligibility for MAID are symptoms of the medical and systemic ableism that afflicts Canadian society. The presentation will conclude with a consideration of the ethical imperative for a Disability-Ethics-based approach to re-evaluating the (un)justness of both exclusionary pandemic protocols and the ever-expanding eligibility for MAID. \n  \nTuesday\, September 20\, 2022\n12:00 – 1:00 PM PDT\nHybrid event\nLife Sciences Centre 1013\, 2350 Health Sciences Mall\, Vancouver\, BC V6T 1Z3\nand Online via Zoom\n\nThis will be a hybrid event with livestreaming. Please indicate on the registration form whether you will be attending in person or online. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \n__ \nHeidi Janz\, Ph.D. (She/Her/Hers) is a Core Faculty Member and Associate Adjunct Professor with the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre at the University of Alberta. Her areas of specialization include Disability Ethics\, Critical Disability Studies\, and Research-Based Drama. She is also an active disability-rights advocate at the national level. In her “other life\,” she is a writer/playwright and filmmaker. Her creative work focuses on making the experiences of people with disabilities accessible to audiences made up of both people with disabilities and people who are temporarily able-bodied. Heidi Janz also has cerebral palsy.

SUMMARY:Accessibility Feedback Sessions
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nIf you are interested in making your work or ideas more accessible\, bring something you are working on (e.g. presentation\, slide deck\, article\, training materials\, poster\, etc) and anyone that joins this group can choose to provide some suggestions and feedback for you and your project\, or you can join us as an observer to learn the art of how to give and get feedback! \nOnce a month we will gather on zoom to give and receive feedback on something that we are working on. SUMMARY:Ask an Expert: Beyond the RDSP
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\n“Ask an Expert – Beyond the RDSP: Financial Planning for People with Disabilities”\, will feature a speaker from Plan Institute\, Disability Alliance BC\, the BC Aboriginal Network on Disability Society\, and Disability Without Poverty. We will be discussing the Canada Disability Benefit\, the Disability Tax Credit\, other disability related Income/Tax Benefits\, the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)\, Income Assistance\, and other financial planning considerations. \nThis event will be live-streamed on Plan Institute’s Facebook page and will be recorded privately for registrants only. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \nWe encourage you to check out our web page on RDSP Awareness Month which features several resources and social media post templates at the following link: https://www.rdsp.com/rdsp-awareness-month/ \n  \nMore information about RDSP Awareness Month:  \nIn 2014\, the government of BC declared October RDSP Awareness Month to help raise awareness about the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). The RDSP is the world’s first savings plan specifically designed for people with disabilities. Even with little to no personal contributions\, there are significant government contributions available to help many Canadians with disabilities to save for their future. \nWe believe that everyone should be talking about the RDSP\, but unfortunately\, we know this isn’t the case. Even with the financial security that it can provide\, many people who qualify still don’t have an RDSP. Many Canadians know about or take advantage of RRSPs or RESPs\, but far fewer people know about the RDSP. \nOnly about 31% of people who are approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) and are aged 0-49 have opened an RDSP (49 is the cutoff for opening an RDSP and being able to receive government contributions). Being approved for the DTC is the most important thing to have before you can open an RDSP. \nIf you or someone you know has a disability\, we encourage you to find out more. Contact your financial institution\, our website\, or Access RDSP for more information. \n  \nMore information about the Access RDSP partnership:  \nAccess RDSP is a partnership between Plan Institute\, BC Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS) and Disability Alliance BC (DABC). The purpose of the program is to increase uptake of the RDSP by helping people learn about\, become eligible for and open an account. We provide support and resources for every step of the way. BCANDS provides one-on-one direct service for Indigenous peoples. All our services are free! \nThe RDSP is a great resource for those it benefits\, yet many still face barriers trying to access it. For example\, a doctor can charge a fee for filling out a DTC application. We continue to advocate for positive changes that will make the RDSP more accessible.
