She has worked extensively with children\, adolescents\, and their families across home\, school\, and community settings. \nDriven by a deep commitment to holistic care and seeing a lack of services in this area\, Colby returned to graduate studies in counselling. Since achieving her RCC designation\, she has been able to integrate behavioral science with therapeutic counselling practices such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy\, Cognitive Behavior Therapy\, Dialectical Behavior Therapy\, Mindfulness-based techniques\, and more. This has allowed for a more comprehensive framework to support emotional\, behavioral\, and psychological growth for the students that she serves. \nAlong with incorporating these practices into her everyday life\, outside of her clinical work Colby is focused on raising kind\, compassionate daughters and caring for her two rescue bunnies. \nTheresa Jouan\, M.Sc.\, BCBA \nAs a BCBA (St. Cloud State University) with a Master of Science\, Theresa has a passion for collaboratively building strong teams\, for mentoring the next generation of consultants\, improving the quality of life for families and the individuals she works with and desires to do better for the autistic community. Theresa has worked for individuals with ASD ranging in age from 18 months to 24 years for the last 20 years and enjoys working on goals that are in line with family and student values. Theresa supports families and youth with a variety of learning disabilities with a background that includes support in an ABA teaching home\, and both public and private schools. She currently teaches ethics in the ABA-SW program through Surrey College. \nTheresa is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional\, along with a Certified Flash Technique Professional. She hopes to incorporate a more comprehensive approach to family support through the provision of mental health practices. Theresa has applied to the BCACC for an RCC designation while she continues to build her base as a counselling intern\, under the supervision of Dr. Sara White and others.

SUMMARY:Open the Door #2 - A Mental Health Series Designed to Transform the System
DESCRIPTION:Parents are fighting for their children’s lives within a mental health system steeped in stigma. They are scared\, isolated\, and exhausted\, caught in a cycle of navigating a fragmented system that fails to meet their needs. \nTheir plea is clear: accessible\, comprehensive care with long-term support. \nIn our first session\, we heard powerful stories and introduced a framework for change. Now\, we’re building on that foundation with a solutions-focused process that brings families\, community leaders\, and policymakers into honest dialogue. \nThis next phase is about turning ideas into action—working together to improve access to mental health services in BC. Ahead of the session\, we’ll share guiding questions to help participants reflect on system barriers and potential policy or practice changes. \nTogether\, let’s open the door to support families\, inform policy\, and build a future where every child can thrive. \n  \nREGISTER FOR SESSION #2\n  \nFamily Support Institute of BC (FSI) is a provincial not-for-profit society committed to supporting families who have a family member with a disability.\nFSI is unique in Canada and the only grass roots family to family organization that has a broad volunteer base.\nFSI SUPPORTS AND SERVICES ARE FREE TO ANY FAMILY \nFSI is committed to making our events as accessible as possible to everyone who wants to attend. SUMMARY:DTC Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a non-refundable federal tax credit that can help reduce the amount of taxes owed by a person with a disability or someone who supports them. It is also a gateway benefit that gives access to the Canada Disability Benefit and RDSP. \nAbout the webinar\nThere are many ways that somebody can qualify for the DTC\, and we know that only about 16% of people who could be eligible for this credit are actually receiving it. This webinar was created with our partners at Disability Alliance BC (DABC) and aims to address some of the misconceptions about the DTC and provide people with the information they need to successfully apply. \nThis webinar will explain what the DTC is and how to make the best use of it\, and also includes information about eligibility criteria\, application tips\, and what happens after you apply. At the end of the webinar\, there is a 45 minute question and answer period with a DTC specialist. \nWhat’s covered: \n\nWhat the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is\, and how much it is worth\nOther benefits of the DTC\, including the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) and Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)\nEligibility criteria\nHow to apply\, including top tips\nWhat happens after you submit the DTC application\n\nWho should attend \nThis webinar is for anyone who would like information and support around the DTC\, including disabled folks\, family members or support people\, and professionals. \nEligibility for the DTC is based on how your disability or condition affects your daily life\, rather than a diagnosis\, and so we encourage all folks who think they may experience restrictions to attend. \nCost \nThe webinar is free. There is no cost to attend. \nInformation for people who are deaf or hard of hearing \nThis webinar is accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing as long as person attending uses the Zoom app. The pre-recorded presentation has American Sign Language (ASL) and closed captions embedded into the video. For the introduction and live Q&A at the end\, we use Zoom’s automatic captioning function. If you require ASL for the full duration of the webinar or have other accessibility needs that we have not covered\, please reach out to us to let us know and we may be able to help. \nLocation \nThe webinar can be attended by computer from anywhere in Canada. All times are listed in Pacific Standard Time (PST). You will receive more information about how to access the webinar after you register. \nFacilitators \nCynthia Minh\, Disability Alliance BC \n  \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Reactive Behaviours
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\nSometimes our loved ones communicate their needs in ways that are hard to understand — through what we often call “reactive behaviors” or behaviors that challenge us. These might stem from things like sensory overload\, limited language\, anxiety\, or other unmet needs. \nAs caregivers\, it can feel overwhelming — but you’re not alone. Join our bi-weekly Family Hangout where caregivers come together to share experiences\, support one another\, and explore tools and strategies that others have found helpful. These conversations are rooted in the belief that all behaviour has meaning and that\, as trusted adults\, we can model self-regulation\, adapt our environments\, and work toward meeting the needs behind the behaviour. \nThis call now brings together families from two former groups — Complex Behaviours and Non-Speaking Autism. We welcome all who are navigating this journey and want to learn and connect in a supportive\, non-judgmental space. Let’s come together\, listen\, share\, and build a more inclusive and compassionate path forward — one where everyone’s needs are understood and valued. \n  \nCLICK TO REGISTER\n  \nFamily Support Institute of BC (FSI) is a provincial not-for-profit society committed to supporting families who have a family member with a disability.
