SUMMARY:FASD Series | A Conversation With RCY About the Excluded Report
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nIn April\, the Office of the Representative for Children and Youth of BC released their “Excluded” report. This documented the experiences of children and youth with FASD\, and their families\, in every aspect of their lives. It particularly highlighted the significant exclusion that is felt by children\, youth and families\, and the extreme inequity in the provision of supports and services for them. Foundational to this is a widespread lack of knowledge and understanding about FASD and the support that is needed for children and youth to thrive. Also foundational is the level of bias\, stigma and racism that circulates around FASD. Just as importantly\, the report highlighted the resilience and strength of the children and youth who participated in the project\, their creativity and talent\, and their aspirations to play an important role in their communities and schools. The Report included 11 Recommendations for improvements in services and supports in child welfare\, education and health. You can find the report here. \nAt this session\, the Representative\, Jennifer Charlesworth\, will provide a short summary presentation about the key findings in the report and what the RCYBC is doing to continue to mobilize toward increased awareness and committed support for children\, youth and their families with FASD. The majority of the session will be a chance or informal discussion/conversation about how we can lift up the important concerns raised in the report. Jennifer will be joined by the two Deputy Representatives\, Samantha Cocker and Pippa Rowcliffe. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \nFamily Support Institute of BC (FSI) is a provincial not-for-profit society committed to supporting families who have a family member with a disability.\nFSI is unique in Canada and the only grass roots family to family organization that has a broad volunteer base. \nFSI SUPPORTS AND SERVICES ARE FREE TO ANY FAMILY \nYou are invited to join FSI CONTINUING CONVERSATIONS\, a private Facebook Group intended to continue conversations of support or provide an alternative platform for support. www.facebook.com/groups/fsicontinuingconversations/ \nAll FSI Zoom sessions can be accessed by telephone only if access to computers and/or internet is a barrier. SUMMARY:Let's Talk About SIB | Session 03: Medically Controversial Topics (Cannabis and CBD)
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nAbout this Session:\nInterest in the use of cannabis and one of its main components\, cannabidiol (CBD)\, has grown over the past few years for a range of issues\, including comorbidities of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) like aggression and self-injurious behaviour. In this talk\, I will provide some context for CBD’s relatively recent rise to prominence. I give a brief background on the endocannabinoid system\, as well as the components of the Cannabis plant species\, namely tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD. I then discuss some of the information available online for cannabis and CBD use in ASD before digging into the wider online discourse amongst parents and caregivers. I then discuss the current state of the science surrounding the topic\, focusing on three recent and prominent studies investigating CBD-rich cannabis use in treating symptoms and co-morbidities of ASD\, particularly difficult behaviours. At the end of the presentation\, I provide some useful resources for navigating this difficult topic. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT\n  \nWhat is Self-Injurious Behaviour (SIB)?\nSelf-Injurious behaviour can be defined as: self-directed injury that is non-suicidal in nature and causes physical trauma. These isolating behaviours may affect children with intellectual impairment\, autism or other forms of neurodiversity. SIB is a multifaceted behaviour that is difficult to understand and treat as the diagnosis varies across individuals. Currently\, proper evidence-based care does not exist\, so it can be extremely challenging to care for children with severe SIB. \nAre you a parent/primary caregiver of a person with Self Injurious Behaviours? Are you passionate about taking your learning to the next level? As a parent/primary caregiver do you want to learn more on how to support yourself and your child? We are bringing to you a unique 6-part series to learn and explore ways to support families and their children. These six sessions are meant to promote education around severe SIB\, to create a supportive SIB community\, as well as to advocate for better health outcomes. \nYou Can Participate in Any of These Ways:\n\nPre-watch any of the 6 series pre-recorded workshops\nPre-watch any of the 6 series pre-recorded workshops then join on event night and participate in our live and interactive Q & A\nJoin us on event night to watch the pre-recorded workshops together followed by our live and interactive Q & A\nJoin the monthly SIB Family Hangout hosted by FSI the last Monday of every month\n\nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON ALL OF THE SESSIONS AND TO VIEW PRE-RECORDED WORKSHOPS

SUMMARY:Back To Normal After Covid - What Does this Mean in the Context of Disability
DESCRIPTION:14th Annual Stephan M. Salzberg Memorial Lecture\nTo Join: https://zoom.us/ and click on Join a Meeting\nAudio Only: 1-833-955-1088\nMeeting ID: 633 1662 7009\nPassword: 143113 \nAngela Clancy\, Executive Director of Family Support Institute of BC FSIBC supports families from all over the province who have family members with disabilities and other concurrent conditions. We provide this support through our staff team and a large provincial volunteer network of families who connect with\, share experiences\, guide\, advocate\, and coach families in BC. The pandemic has brought to light issues that have gone un-attended for decades. It has also exacerbated issues that families were coping with\, need sup-port for\, and yet had none. This session will highlight those issues that we are supporting and advocating provincially at FSI. \nKathryn Underwood\, Professor in school of Early Childhood Studies at X-University.\nDrawing on Findings from the Inclusive Early Childhood Service System (IECSS) project\, and Critical Disability Theory\, this presentation will examine how the pandemic has illuminated ex-isting structural barriers to participation\, and ethical considerations for care relationships with disabled children. The work of families on behalf of their children\, and in service of early child-hood education and care systems will be examined\, with specific reference to children whose custodial relationships are unclear\, changing or unstable. \nCynthia Vallance\, Patient and Family Engagement Advisor\, Sunnyhill Health Ctr.\nWithout doubt\, the pandemic has created incredible challenges within our healthcare system\, and for parents and caregivers of children with complex health care needs\, at times this impact is felt most intensely. However\, all is not lost! Through adversity comes creative solutions\, less red tape and unique opportunities that may actually make things a little better for patients and families. Learn more about recent changes that affect the care we receive and that my not have happened without the pandemic. \n  \nHosted & Sponsored by the Sunny Hill & the PHSA Ethics Service

SUMMARY:Real Talk Women’s Zoom Hangout
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nHey folks! This is a women’s-only event. It’s open to all women.\nReal Talk events have moved onto Zoom! You’ll need a computer / smartphone / tablet\, headphones\, and (ideally) a private place to watch. \nEverybody has questions about dating\, love\, relationships\, and sex. Things like: \nHow do I meet a boyfriend / girlfriend / partner? \nHow do I let my family know that I want to date? \nHow can I make sex safer? \nWhat is consent? \nIt’s totally normal. But sometimes it can be hard to know where to get good information. At this event\, we’ll watch some Real Talk videos\, and have a conversation hosted by a Certified Sexual Health Educator. We’ll talk about where to get good information\, who can support us with this stuff\, and how to figure out confusing situations. People are welcome to talk about things\, or to just listen if they don’t want to talk. \nIf you want a family member\, friend\, or staff member to support you to tune in to the Zoom Hangout\, that’s great. They don’t need to register\, they can just show up with you. \nPlease note: The maximum number of attendees at a Real Talk Zoom Hangout is 12. We do this so that everyone has a chance to participate and share ideas if they want to. If you try to register someone and the event is full – don’t worry\, we’ll be running these frequently while Social Distancing is in effect. If you have an event link from signing up one person please DON’T pass it on to others who have not registered. This will keep the event more confidential and more useful for everyone. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO JOIN THE MEETING\nMeeting ID: 869 3075 4915 \nPasscode: 622834

I have been living with overlapping but “invisible-to-the-general-public” disabilities since birth. It is my goal to champion those with disabilities by helping able-bodied people to understand our struggles. My ultimate goal is to see a world designed for our needs\, perfectly integrated with present society.  We deserve a more even playing field\, so I believe we must create it.

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with NEW WAVE Online Exhibit featuring Disabled Artists Under 30\, we are excited to present a small series of creative workshops presented by some of the participating artists! \nAll sessions are FREE and open to ALL! \nTuesday November 23rd: 6:00pm – 8:00pm (PST)\nOn Zoom – ASL & Auto Generated Captioning Available \n\nTo Register Click HERE\n  \nAbstract art at first glance can look easy\, but then your first attempt looks like the aftermath of a toddler’s lunch. How do abstract artists do it? What is the difference between abstract art\, and a plain mess? How do we guide the eye\, evoke emotion\, and generate curiosity with imagery that barely tells of a line? \nIn Midori’s workshop\, participants will learn things like the rule of three\, balancing soft and hard lines\, guiding the eye\, and creative spatter\, and how to apply these to abstract art. \nSupplies Needed: any basic painting surfaces and supplies
