SUMMARY:Latest Updates on the Canada Disability Benefit
DESCRIPTION:Join Disability Without Poverty to get the latest scoop on the Canada Disability Benefit. We want to update you on where’s the bill. You’ll find out the current status of Bill C22\, the question of budgeting for the benefit\, and an update from DWP. \nJoin us on Zoom Tuesday\, April 4\, 2023 from 9-10am PT/12-1pm ET \nASL\, LSQ\, English & French closed captioning\, as well as Simultaneous French translation will be provided. \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \n#WheresTheBill? \nBill C-22 finished Second reading on March 9. It is now with the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs\, Science and Technology (SOCI)\, with public hearings scheduled from March 22 onwards. \nOnce the committee has done their work\, a report is made. If the Senate does not propose any amendments\, the bill moves onto Third Reading. \nIf the Senate proposes amendments\, the bill is sent back to the House of Commons to debate these new amendments. \nThe risk with amendments in the Senate is that the House of Commons can vote to defeat the bill\, and Bill C-22 would be no more.

SUMMARY:BC’s Institutional Legacy and the Emergence of the Community Living Movement
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\nCurrent services and supports for people with an intellectual disability have emerged from a long and complicated history of fear and oppression\, charitable beliefs\, pseudo-science\, human rights and economic priorities that date back hundreds and even thousands of years. \nBeginning almost 200 years ago\, across Canada\, and later in British Columbia\, the institutional model was originally considered a progressive and compassionate response to meeting the needs of people with disabilities. Despite the failure of institutions in meeting people’s needs\, the model has persisted\, and people continue to be institutionalized in several provinces. The closure of large institutions in BC in the 1990s was achieved through the perseverance and sustained advocacy organized by family members\, service providers\, allies in government and especially\, people with disabilities themselves. Continuing our conversations about the history\, values\, and beliefs that guide the movement is vital to sustaining ourselves – and the vision of community living for all. \nThis two-hour session explores the roots and history of institutionalization of people with disabilities and the emergence of the community living movement in BC and Canada and the perspectives of survivor-activists who have fought and continue to fight for justice for people forced to live in institutions\, past and present. SUMMARY:Dr. Ross Greene – Collaborative & Proactive Solutions: Moving From Power and Control to Collaboration and Problem-Solving
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nJoin us for a presentation and Q & A with Dr. Ross Greene as he speaks about how Collaborative and Proactive Solutions can help us show our kids we care about them.   Solving problems together creates connection and allows our children to be a part of finding solutions to what is causing their concerning behaviour. Dr. Greene’s work reminds us that things go better for everyone\, when we solve problems together and that kids do well if they can. \nCollaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) is the evidence-based model of care that helps parents and caregivers focus on identifying the problems that are causing concerning behaviors in kids and solving those problems collaboratively and proactively. The goal is to foster a problem-solving\, collaborative partnership between adults and kids and to engage kids in solving the problems that affect their lives. As such\, the CPS model is non-punitive and non-adversarial\, decreases the likelihood of conflict\, enhances relationships\, improves communication\, and helps kids and adults learn and display the skills on the more positive side of human nature: empathy\, appreciating how one’s behavior is affecting others\, resolving disagreements in ways that do not involve conflict\, taking another’s perspective\, and honesty. \nPlease submit your question for Dr. Greene about CPS when you register\, he will use these questions for the Q & A component of this event. \nRoss W. Greene\, Ph.D. is the originator of Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS)\, as described in his influential books The Explosive Child\, Lost at School\, Lost & Found\, and Raising Human Beings. He also developed and executive produced the documentary film\, The Kids We Lose\, released in 2018. Dr. Greene served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years\, and is now Founding Director of the non-profit Lives in the Balance (www.livesinthebalance.org)\, which aims to disseminate the CPS model and support caregivers through a vast array of free web-based resources; advocate on behalf of kids with concerning behaviors and their caregivers; and advocate for systemic changes to encourage the use of non-punitive\, non-exclusionary interventions. He is currently adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech and adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Science at University of Technology Sydney in Australia. Dr. Greene’s research has been funded by the Stanley Research Institute\, the National Institutes of Mental Health\, the U.S. Department of Education\, and the Maine Juvenile Justice Advisory Group.  He lectures and consults extensively to families\, general and special education schools\, inpatient psychiatry units\, and residential and juvenile detention facilities throughout the world. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Childhood Disability (Without) Poverty: a National Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This family-led event will explore the intersection of familial poverty\, childhood disability\, and health outcomes. It will create an opportunity for families\, health care professionals\, and policy researchers to come together and share both their knowledge and lived experiences on equal footing to identify where we can partner to effect systemic change. Childhood disability is known to have a huge financial impact on families and children. \nThere is simply not enough data or awareness about the intersection of childhood disability with familial and personal lifelong financial challenges. \nWe want to change that. \nDisability Without Poverty is a movement\, led by people with disabilities supported by our families\, friends\, service providers\, allies and organizations. Right now\, our priority is to build consensus toward a federal Canada Disability Benefit that would ensure income support above the poverty line for people who live with disabilities. \n  \n\nCLICK TO REGISTER\n  \n\n\n\nCall for Artists Living in Canada \nWe are seeking submissions\, 3 minutes maximum\, of original material – a poem\, song\, monologue\, however you express yourself – to publicize and present within and around this national conversation about Childhood Disability Poverty at our discretion. \nIf you’re interested in being featured\, please include or attach to an email: \n\n30 second to 3 minute video clip. Longer clips may be edited at our discretion.\nShort bio including whether you have a disability you would like to disclose (maximum 50 words).\nYour Links (Facebook\, Twitter\, LinkedIn\, website) for “tags” to allow viewers to contact you for future performances and sales.\n\nSend email to alockitch@plan.ca on or before May 1\, 2023. \n  \nFamilies and Other Attendees: Would you like to let us know what has prompted you to register for this conference\, and how it connects to your life and / or work? Please submit a short written blurb or a video submission of 3 minutes maximum by May 1\, 2023 to alockitch@plan.ca. \n  \nOther ways Disability Without Poverty might use artist\, family\, and other attendee submissions and contact information: \n\nTo amplify and promote your creativity through social media.\nFor future opportunities for performance and visibility.\nYour name and email contact for invitations to our events and other mailings about Disability Without Poverty. You may unsubscribe at any time.\n\nIf you prefer to remain anonymous or have questions or concerns about the use of your submitted materials\, please contact alockitch@plan.ca

SUMMARY:Where You Are | Relaxed Theater Performance
DESCRIPTION:Relaxed performances are an adaptive form of theatre designed to welcome people who don’t feel comfortable in a traditional theatre environment. This includes – but is not limited to – those with autism\, sensory processing conditions\, anxiety\, learning or intellectual disabilities\, difficulty sitting still or quietly\, and families with infants and toddlers. \nABOUT THE SHOW: Sisters Glenda and Suzanne live a peaceful retirement selling homemade jam on Manitoulin Island. This summer\, their usual concerns – trying to orchestrate sightings of their handsome veterinarian neighbour and preparing for the visit of Suzanne’s grown daughter\, Beth – are complicated by a secret the sisters can no longer contain. When Beth arrives with secrets of her own\, the three women are forced to face things that will change their lives and relationships forever. \nContent warning \nThere are mature themes in this play (including sexuality\, illness and dying). There is mild language and mild drug use. \n  \nGET YOUR TICKETS HERE\n  \nWhat sets relaxed performances apart? \nWhile the artistic integrity of a play remains the same\, the audience experience of relaxed performances differs in a few key ways: \n\nTickets are pay-what-you-can\, with a suggested payment of $10. All caregivers/support persons attend for free.\nThe house lights remain on during the performance.\nHarsh sound and lighting effects are dampened or removed.\nThere is a pre-show introduction to let people know what to expect and to establish an inclusive environment. The talk is led by our accessibility coordinator who has lived experience with disabilities. The talk includes a brief discussion of the play’s themes and any important historical context. The actors introduce themselves to the audience and briefly describe the emotional arc of their character and anything upsetting they may face during the show. There is an explanation and demonstration of effects that might be startling (i.e. loud sounds and prop weapons).\nThe audience is reminded that there is a casual approach to movement and noise within the theatre space. Patrons can move\, stand up\, stretch\, make noise\, and exit and re-enter the theatre at any point during the show.\n\nAfter the performance is over\, the actors re-introduce themselves to the audience.
