SUMMARY:Back To Normal After Covid - What Does this Mean in the Context of Disability
DESCRIPTION:14th Annual Stephan M. Salzberg Memorial Lecture\nTo Join: https://zoom.us/ and click on Join a Meeting\nAudio Only: 1-833-955-1088\nMeeting ID: 633 1662 7009\nPassword: 143113 \nAngela Clancy\, Executive Director of Family Support Institute of BC FSIBC supports families from all over the province who have family members with disabilities and other concurrent conditions. We provide this support through our staff team and a large provincial volunteer network of families who connect with\, share experiences\, guide\, advocate\, and coach families in BC. The pandemic has brought to light issues that have gone un-attended for decades. It has also exacerbated issues that families were coping with\, need sup-port for\, and yet had none. This session will highlight those issues that we are supporting and advocating provincially at FSI. \nKathryn Underwood\, Professor in school of Early Childhood Studies at X-University.\nDrawing on Findings from the Inclusive Early Childhood Service System (IECSS) project\, and Critical Disability Theory\, this presentation will examine how the pandemic has illuminated ex-isting structural barriers to participation\, and ethical considerations for care relationships with disabled children. The work of families on behalf of their children\, and in service of early child-hood education and care systems will be examined\, with specific reference to children whose custodial relationships are unclear\, changing or unstable. \nCynthia Vallance\, Patient and Family Engagement Advisor\, Sunnyhill Health Ctr.\nWithout doubt\, the pandemic has created incredible challenges within our healthcare system\, and for parents and caregivers of children with complex health care needs\, at times this impact is felt most intensely. However\, all is not lost! Through adversity comes creative solutions\, less red tape and unique opportunities that may actually make things a little better for patients and families. Learn more about recent changes that affect the care we receive and that my not have happened without the pandemic. \n  \nHosted & Sponsored by the Sunny Hill & the PHSA Ethics Service

SUMMARY:Real Talk Women’s Zoom Hangout
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nHey folks! This is a women’s-only event. It’s open to all women.\nReal Talk events have moved onto Zoom! You’ll need a computer / smartphone / tablet\, headphones\, and (ideally) a private place to watch. \nEverybody has questions about dating\, love\, relationships\, and sex. Things like: \nHow do I meet a boyfriend / girlfriend / partner? \nHow do I let my family know that I want to date? \nHow can I make sex safer? \nWhat is consent? \nIt’s totally normal. But sometimes it can be hard to know where to get good information. At this event\, we’ll watch some Real Talk videos\, and have a conversation hosted by a Certified Sexual Health Educator. We’ll talk about where to get good information\, who can support us with this stuff\, and how to figure out confusing situations. People are welcome to talk about things\, or to just listen if they don’t want to talk. \nIf you want a family member\, friend\, or staff member to support you to tune in to the Zoom Hangout\, that’s great. They don’t need to register\, they can just show up with you. \nPlease note: The maximum number of attendees at a Real Talk Zoom Hangout is 12. We do this so that everyone has a chance to participate and share ideas if they want to. If you try to register someone and the event is full – don’t worry\, we’ll be running these frequently while Social Distancing is in effect. If you have an event link from signing up one person please DON’T pass it on to others who have not registered. This will keep the event more confidential and more useful for everyone. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO JOIN THE MEETING\nMeeting ID: 869 3075 4915 \nPasscode: 622834

I have been living with overlapping but “invisible-to-the-general-public” disabilities since birth. It is my goal to champion those with disabilities by helping able-bodied people to understand our struggles. My ultimate goal is to see a world designed for our needs\, perfectly integrated with present society.  We deserve a more even playing field\, so I believe we must create it.

SUMMARY:8 DAYS OF ACTION FOR ACCESS
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \n\n\n#AccessDelayedIsAccessDenied!\n\n\n\nRally at the BC Legislature\, Victoria – November 25th\, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm \nDaily Online Lunch hour Teach-ins: November 26th – December 2nd\, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \nRally outside the BC Government Offices\, Canada Place\, Vancouver – December 3rd\, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm \nJoin people with disabilities and their families in a series of actions calling on the BC government to immediately remove barriers to access in education and all systems and enact the rights of disabled children\, youth and adults. Access delayed is access denied! \n(Note:  This series of actions begins the day AFTER the ‘Rally In Victoria With The ASN’ on November 24th – if you are coming to Victoria for that action\, please stay over if you can and join us!) \n  \nRegister on Eventbrite for the November 25th Day Zero rally here\n\n  \nPlease respect the comfort of others around COVID-19 protocols at this in-person event. Masks\, physical distancing and other safety precautions are as important as ever. \n  \nFollow the Facebook event for regular updates on the 8 Days of Action here:\n  \nDetails: \nThis series of actions is organized by volunteer community members of the BCEdAccess Society and a coalition of participating organisations\, and powered by the community. \nWhy: \nFor far too long\, disabled children\, youth and adults\, diagnosed and undiagnosed\, have been denied equitable access. Not just to education but to all of the systems that are supposed to be there to support them\, from early intervention\, health care\,  to community inclusion and everything in between. Service delivery systems are ableist and otherwise oppressive. We\, as disabled people and those who care for them\, have been trying to raise these issues for decades. There is no lack of clarity on what needs to be done – there is only lack of action and courage to take big steps to collaborate with and empower families. We want equity in representation to collaborate on making real progress toward equity for all. \nSchedule \nLand Acknowledgement \nWe would like to acknowledge that we are holding the November 25th rally on the stolen ancestral territories of the Lekwungen Peoples\, the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations. The December 3rd rally will be held on the stolen and ancestral territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. All of these First Nations Peoples have lived on and taken care of this land since time immemorial. \nWe acknowledge historical and ongoing injustices that Indigenous Peoples (First Nations\, Métis and Inuit) endure in Canada\, and recognize our shared commitments to taking care of this land\, and to rebuilding and renewing respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. In particular we are committed to following the lead of Indigenous rights-holders in their work on decolonizing education and closing the significant educational\, employment\, and health outcome gaps that exist between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians. \nDay 0 – Thursday\, Nov.25th\, 2021 11-2pm \nRally at the Victoria Legislature\, on the stolen lands of the Lekwungen Peoples\, the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations. Also broadcast online. \nEveryone from all over BC is invited to join people with disabilities and their families at the Victoria Legislature for a rally on access to education and other supports and services for disabled people\, to kick off 8 days of action for access! \nDays 1 through 7 – Friday\, Nov 26 – Thursday\, Dec 2  \n“Lunch hour Teach-ins” 12-1 pm \nLive Online discussions each day with organizations and families sharing how the barriers to access to equitable education intersect with all the other systems. Please let us know if you want in! \nDay 8 Dec 3 – International Day of Disabled Persons \nRally at the BC government offices in Vancouver\, on the stolen lands of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations\, led by youth and adults with disabilities. Also broadcast online. \nThis day will be led by BC People First\, convening youth and adults with disabilities – we hope the whole province will join us in person and online! \nHow you can help!  \nShare this event with your friends\, groups and organizations! We need everyone to participate! \nDonate to help us pay for signs\, ASL interpreters and other costs! \nSee our Action Toolkit for 8 big areas to help with the 8 Days of Action For Access! \nContact us: info@bcedaccess.com
