I have been living with overlapping but “invisible-to-the-general-public” disabilities since birth. It is my goal to champion those with disabilities by helping able-bodied people to understand our struggles. My ultimate goal is to see a world designed for our needs\, perfectly integrated with present society.  We deserve a more even playing field\, so I believe we must create it.

SUMMARY:Making Abstract Art with Midori Ryans
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with NEW WAVE Online Exhibit featuring Disabled Artists Under 30\, we are excited to present a small series of creative workshops presented by some of the participating artists! \nAll sessions are FREE and open to ALL! \nTuesday November 23rd: 6:00pm – 8:00pm (PST)\nOn Zoom – ASL & Auto Generated Captioning Available \n\nTo Register Click HERE\n  \nAbstract art at first glance can look easy\, but then your first attempt looks like the aftermath of a toddler’s lunch. How do abstract artists do it? What is the difference between abstract art\, and a plain mess? How do we guide the eye\, evoke emotion\, and generate curiosity with imagery that barely tells of a line? \nIn Midori’s workshop\, participants will learn things like the rule of three\, balancing soft and hard lines\, guiding the eye\, and creative spatter\, and how to apply these to abstract art. \nSupplies Needed: any basic painting surfaces and supplies

SUMMARY:8 DAYS OF ACTION FOR ACCESS
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \n\n\n#AccessDelayedIsAccessDenied!\n\n\n\nRally at the BC Legislature\, Victoria – November 25th\, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm \nDaily Online Lunch hour Teach-ins: November 26th – December 2nd\, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \nRally outside the BC Government Offices\, Canada Place\, Vancouver – December 3rd\, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm \nJoin people with disabilities and their families in a series of actions calling on the BC government to immediately remove barriers to access in education and all systems and enact the rights of disabled children\, youth and adults. Access delayed is access denied! \n(Note:  This series of actions begins the day AFTER the ‘Rally In Victoria With The ASN’ on November 24th – if you are coming to Victoria for that action\, please stay over if you can and join us!) \n  \nRegister on Eventbrite for the November 25th Day Zero rally here\n\n  \nPlease respect the comfort of others around COVID-19 protocols at this in-person event. Masks\, physical distancing and other safety precautions are as important as ever. \n  \nFollow the Facebook event for regular updates on the 8 Days of Action here:\n  \nDetails: \nThis series of actions is organized by volunteer community members of the BCEdAccess Society and a coalition of participating organisations\, and powered by the community. \nWhy: \nFor far too long\, disabled children\, youth and adults\, diagnosed and undiagnosed\, have been denied equitable access. Not just to education but to all of the systems that are supposed to be there to support them\, from early intervention\, health care\,  to community inclusion and everything in between. Service delivery systems are ableist and otherwise oppressive. We\, as disabled people and those who care for them\, have been trying to raise these issues for decades. There is no lack of clarity on what needs to be done – there is only lack of action and courage to take big steps to collaborate with and empower families. We want equity in representation to collaborate on making real progress toward equity for all. \nSchedule \nLand Acknowledgement \nWe would like to acknowledge that we are holding the November 25th rally on the stolen ancestral territories of the Lekwungen Peoples\, the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations. The December 3rd rally will be held on the stolen and ancestral territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. All of these First Nations Peoples have lived on and taken care of this land since time immemorial. \nWe acknowledge historical and ongoing injustices that Indigenous Peoples (First Nations\, Métis and Inuit) endure in Canada\, and recognize our shared commitments to taking care of this land\, and to rebuilding and renewing respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. In particular we are committed to following the lead of Indigenous rights-holders in their work on decolonizing education and closing the significant educational\, employment\, and health outcome gaps that exist between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians. \nDay 0 – Thursday\, Nov.25th\, 2021 11-2pm \nRally at the Victoria Legislature\, on the stolen lands of the Lekwungen Peoples\, the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations. Also broadcast online. \nEveryone from all over BC is invited to join people with disabilities and their families at the Victoria Legislature for a rally on access to education and other supports and services for disabled people\, to kick off 8 days of action for access! \nDays 1 through 7 – Friday\, Nov 26 – Thursday\, Dec 2  \n“Lunch hour Teach-ins” 12-1 pm \nLive Online discussions each day with organizations and families sharing how the barriers to access to equitable education intersect with all the other systems. Please let us know if you want in! \nDay 8 Dec 3 – International Day of Disabled Persons \nRally at the BC government offices in Vancouver\, on the stolen lands of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations\, led by youth and adults with disabilities. Also broadcast online. \nThis day will be led by BC People First\, convening youth and adults with disabilities – we hope the whole province will join us in person and online! \nHow you can help!  \nShare this event with your friends\, groups and organizations! We need everyone to participate! \nDonate to help us pay for signs\, ASL interpreters and other costs! \nSee our Action Toolkit for 8 big areas to help with the 8 Days of Action For Access! \nContact us: info@bcedaccess.com

SUMMARY:Let's Talk About SIB | Session 04: A Mixed Bag: Psychiatric Comorbidities
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nAbout this Session:\n78% of children with autism have at least one mental health condition. Join us for a session in learning about common psychiatric comorbidities and their methods of treatment. We will discuss common psychotherapies and pharmacologic treatments for ADHD\, anxiety disorders\, OCD-related disorders\, mood disorders\, as well as catatonia. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT\n  \nWhat is Self-Injurious Behaviour (SIB)?\nSelf-Injurious behaviour can be defined as: self-directed injury that is non-suicidal in nature and causes physical trauma. These isolating behaviours may affect children with intellectual impairment\, autism or other forms of neurodiversity. SIB is a multifaceted behaviour that is difficult to understand and treat as the diagnosis varies across individuals. Currently\, proper evidence-based care does not exist\, so it can be extremely challenging to care for children with severe SIB. \nAre you a parent/primary caregiver of a person with Self Injurious Behaviours? Are you passionate about taking your learning to the next level? As a parent/primary caregiver do you want to learn more on how to support yourself and your child? We are bringing to you a unique 6-part series to learn and explore ways to support families and their children. These six sessions are meant to promote education around severe SIB\, to create a supportive SIB community\, as well as to advocate for better health outcomes. \nYou Can Participate in Any of These Ways:\n\nPre-watch any of the 6 series pre-recorded workshops\nPre-watch any of the 6 series pre-recorded workshops then join on event night and participate in our live and interactive Q & A\nJoin us on event night to watch the pre-recorded workshops together followed by our live and interactive Q & A\nJoin the monthly SIB Family Hangout hosted by FSI the last Monday of every month\n\nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON ALL OF THE SESSIONS AND TO VIEW PRE-RECORDED WORKSHOPS
