DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO:   « Back to all events \nJoin us for What Families Need to Know When Hiring Respite Workers with Caitlin Goodsell \nHiring a respite provider is not always as straightforward as it seems. In this session\, we will explore the different ways of correctly hiring respite providers under the guidelines set out by the Canada Revenue Agency and Employment Standards. We will focus on when respite providers are classified as employees and when they are classified as contractors. We will also cover the obligations for both the families and staff under each type of relationship. \n  \nClick Here to Register!  \n  \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nCaitlin Goodsell  was born and raised in the Kootenays and moved to the Lower Mainland\, where she now resides\, in 2005. She has worked with people with disabilities throughout her life\, beginning by assisting with the care of her foster siblings\, and continuing as a support worker for individuals with various and complex needs. She has been a facilitator with Vela for the Lower Mainland and Kootenay region since 2008\, and has recently moved into the position of co-Executive Director.

DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nWhat Lower Mainland Hikes and Adventures is all about: \nWe connect together as a group of people who want to hike and build a greater appreciation of the outdoors. We recognize that life comes at different speeds for all of us\, and sharing the challenge of hiking\, kayaking\, or choosing your own adventure\, brings us together as a group. Now that we are physically distancing and limiting our social circles\, you can tune in online. We have had community members share their knowledge about the outdoors\, and folks that are working with a Community Connector try out roles like co-host\, camera person\, or welcomer. \nThis group has been  inspired by folks who have a range of diverse-abilities. With accessibility at the forefront of our minds\, we began organizing hikes and adventures that are interesting and available to all different types of people. Now during the pandemic\, we haven’t been doing hikes with large groups\, and have pivoted to sharing our hikes and adventures online to reach a wider range of folks. You can see some of the pictures of previous adventures on LMHA meetup.com and our LMHA facebook group. DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nThis presentation is for anyone who wants to learn more about human rights from People First members in BC. It is about one of the societal barriers to inclusion and equality for many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Canada – Sheltered Workshops. \nEmployment is one of our priorities for People First members. People First has been talking about Sheltered Workshops for a long time. Members have done surveys and focus groups to help understand this issue. People First of Canada (PFC) also hired a research company to help find out more about this issue. They surveyed agencies in different provinces and territories to get more information. All of this work helped us put together this presentation that is being given by members of our BC People First Presentation Team: Lorie Sherritt\, Manjeet Ghangass\, and David Johnston. Thank you for joining us! \nThe goal of this presentation is to bring attention to the problem of Sheltered Work and Workshops in Canada. Not enough people know about this issue. It’s happening across our country and it’s been going on for a long time – too long. Another goal is to give people in the community a way to help People First by taking action. We are sharing different things that can be done to help change the situation for people who are hurt by Sheltered Workshops. \nLearning Outcomes:\nLearn about Sheltered Workshops in Canada and how they affect people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.\nLearn how to support real work for real pay.\nLearn different things to do that can help change the situation and ways to take action. \nRegister to attend the event HERE\, click link.\n  \nPlease register by Friday\, July 9th.
