In this session\, we will dive into the importance\, barriers and strategies of overcoming these difficulties. We will discuss an approach to guide parents’ plan and choice of techniques\, depending on the individual child’s learning style and the context. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT\n  \nWhat is Self-Injurious Behaviour (SIB)?\nSelf-Injurious behaviour can be defined as: self-directed injury that is non-suicidal in nature and causes physical trauma. These isolating behaviours may affect children with intellectual impairment\, autism or other forms of neurodiversity. SIB is a multifaceted behaviour that is difficult to understand and treat as the diagnosis varies across individuals. Currently\, proper evidence-based care does not exist\, so it can be extremely challenging to care for children with severe SIB. \nAre you a parent/primary caregiver of a person with Self Injurious Behaviours? Are you passionate about taking your learning to the next level? As a parent/primary caregiver do you want to learn more on how to support yourself and your child? We are bringing to you a unique 6-part series to learn and explore ways to support families and their children. Things like: \n\n\nHow do I meet a boyfriend / girlfriend / partner? \n\n\nHow do I let my family know that I want to date? \n\n\nHow can I make sex safer? \n\n\nWhat is consent? \n\n\nIt’s totally normal. It’s also normal to feel embarrassed discussing this stuff\, or hearing other folks discuss it. Got questions? Feeling awkward to ask them? Don’t worry. Real Talk has an event coming up just for you. \nWe’ve heard from some of our newer participants that they’ve sometimes felt awkward being in the same workshop as other folks who have more experience and who ask more explicit questions. You’ve told us you want a space where it’s okay to be a beginner and to ask beginner questions. \nSo we’ve created a Real Talk event just for folks who either: \n\n\nhave never attended before \nAND / OR \n\n\nfeel very uncomfortable talking about or hearing about sex\, dating or relationships. \n\n\nIt’s called Real Talk Starter Talks. \nIf you’re embarrassed\, don’t worry! We’ll get you the information you’re looking for. We won’t make fun of your questions. We won’t say that your questions are inappropriate. We’ll take things slowly\, with lots of breaks. Relax – it’s the chill version of Real Talk. \nAt this event\, we’ll watch some Real Talk videos\, and have a conversation hosted by a Certified Sexual Health Educator. We’ll talk about where to get good information\, who can support us with this stuff\, and how to figure out confusing situations. Just like with every Real Talk event\, people are welcome to talk about things & ask questions\, or to just listen if they don’t want to talk. \nIf you want a family member\, friend\, or staff member to support you to tune in to the Zoom Hangout\, that’s great.
