SUMMARY:One Day Community Picnic
DESCRIPTION:One Day is a family & community event that takes place each September as Victoria’s “Kick Off to Community Living Month.” \nOne Day is a community event organized by community organizations that work with children\, youth and adults with intellectual disabilities. The purpose of One Day is to celebrate the diversity in our community through the planning of a free\, family-oriented celebration of everyone – for everyone – in our community. Our planning committee works hard to encourage the community at large to attend in the hope that through celebrating our similarities\, we can break down the barriers that often result in social isolation for some. One Day provides free musical entertainment\, BBQ lunch and refreshments\, organized games and activities that anyone can participate in\, FREE children’s activities\, bouncies\, face painting\, prizes and special guests. We also provide a Village Market where crafts people and artists\, some of whom have a disability\, can sell their wares. In 2015\, 1\,000 community members attended One Day. \n  \nThis 11th One Day will look a little bit different than past events due to changes being implemented that support COVID-19 health and safety for everyone\, but attendees can expect our usual stage packed full of performers and music\, special guests\, children’s activities\, community\, and fun! \n  \nFor more information on this event click here\n  \ninfo@beconsupport.ca

SUMMARY:Plagued to Death by Systemic Ableism: What the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Expansion of Eligibility for MAiD Reveal About the Lethal Dangers of Systemic Ableism in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a talk by Dr. Heidi Janz on systemic ableism in Canada. \nAbstract: 2020 and the advent of COVID-19 ushered in a time of new peril for disabled people in Canada. Government and public health officials repeated their daily mantra: “We’re all in this together\,” while at the same time creating policies and legislation which made it clear that disabled Canadians are not part of the “we.” Provinces quietly developed Critical Care Triage Protocols which would prohibit many disabled people from receiving critical care in the event that a surge in severe COVID cases outstripped available resources\, and at the national level\, government pushed through an expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) despite overwhelming opposition from major disability rights organizations\, scholars\, activists and the United Nations. \nDrawing on my research and experience as a disability ethics educator and advocate\, I will demonstrate that both Canada’s COVID-19 response and its expansion of eligibility for MAID are symptoms of the medical and systemic ableism that afflicts Canadian society. The presentation will conclude with a consideration of the ethical imperative for a Disability-Ethics-based approach to re-evaluating the (un)justness of both exclusionary pandemic protocols and the ever-expanding eligibility for MAID. \n  \nTuesday\, September 20\, 2022\n12:00 – 1:00 PM PDT\nHybrid event\nLife Sciences Centre 1013\, 2350 Health Sciences Mall\, Vancouver\, BC V6T 1Z3\nand Online via Zoom\n\nThis will be a hybrid event with livestreaming. Please indicate on the registration form whether you will be attending in person or online. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \n__ \nHeidi Janz\, Ph.D. (She/Her/Hers) is a Core Faculty Member and Associate Adjunct Professor with the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre at the University of Alberta. Her areas of specialization include Disability Ethics\, Critical Disability Studies\, and Research-Based Drama. She is also an active disability-rights advocate at the national level. In her “other life\,” she is a writer/playwright and filmmaker. Her creative work focuses on making the experiences of people with disabilities accessible to audiences made up of both people with disabilities and people who are temporarily able-bodied. Heidi Janz also has cerebral palsy.

SUMMARY:Accessibility Feedback Sessions
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nIf you are interested in making your work or ideas more accessible\, bring something you are working on (e.g. presentation\, slide deck\, article\, training materials\, poster\, etc) and anyone that joins this group can choose to provide some suggestions and feedback for you and your project\, or you can join us as an observer to learn the art of how to give and get feedback! \nOnce a month we will gather on zoom to give and receive feedback on something that we are working on. The reason we do this is because getting feedback and sharing ideas with a diverse group of people helps to improve communication and accessibility. We want everyone to understand and really get what it is we are trying to share! It is also a place for us to practice giving feedback\, because that can be difficult sometimes. \n  \nJOIN THE EXPERIENCE
