SUMMARY:BC’s Institutional Legacy and the Emergence of the Community Living Movement
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events\nCurrent services and supports for people with an intellectual disability have emerged from a long and complicated history of fear and oppression\, charitable beliefs\, pseudo-science\, human rights and economic priorities that date back hundreds and even thousands of years. \nBeginning almost 200 years ago\, across Canada\, and later in British Columbia\, the institutional model was originally considered a progressive and compassionate response to meeting the needs of people with disabilities. Despite the failure of institutions in meeting people’s needs\, the model has persisted\, and people continue to be institutionalized in several provinces. The closure of large institutions in BC in the 1990s was achieved through the perseverance and sustained advocacy organized by family members\, service providers\, allies in government and especially\, people with disabilities themselves. Continuing our conversations about the history\, values\, and beliefs that guide the movement is vital to sustaining ourselves – and the vision of community living for all. \nThis two-hour session explores the roots and history of institutionalization of people with disabilities and the emergence of the community living movement in BC and Canada and the perspectives of survivor-activists who have fought and continue to fight for justice for people forced to live in institutions\, past and present. SUMMARY:FASD Themed Series: The Foster Family Coalition of the NWT
DESCRIPTION:Please join Tammy Roberts\, Leesa Myers and Sandra Noel from The Foster Family Coalition of the NWT to discuss the 4Y and 4Y Justice Programs.  The 4Y Program began in June 2019 due to the apparent need for direct support for young people with PAE and FASD as they transition into adulthood. \nIn Yellowknife\, the 4Y Program complements other community programs and services available to support the youth participants\, therefore contributing to a higher quality of care in the city. It also supports caregivers and others in the youth’s social network\, which improves the capacity for care. This is done by providing a Navigator to spend 4 hours a week with the youth to encourage improved physical and mental health\, improved self-confidence and self-determination\, more community involvement in the transition planning of the youth in the community and prevention and reduction of additional challenges such as mental health issues\, addictions\, police involvement\, and self-harm. The 4Y Program provides 8 hours a week with a Navigator to youth involved in the justice system. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \nTammy Roberts has been the Executive Director of the Foster Family Coalition of the Northwest Territories since 2009 and in this position facilitates PRIDE Training and provides support to foster and adoptive parents and child protection workers across the territory. She also is the secretary of the Canadian Foster Family Association\, participates on the National Executive Director’s Working Group and is the Co-chair of the CanFASD Research Network Family Advisory Committee. \nSandra Noel is the Director of the Northwest Territories on the board of Youth in Care Canada. She works with directors from other provinces and territories to improve the lives of all youth in care. Noel hopes to become a voice for the NWT’s children in care\, adding she herself felt ‘voiceless’ at times while growing up. \nLeesa Myers is the Coordinator of the 4Y/GLOW with The Foster Family Coalition of the NWT \n  \nFamily Support Institute of BC (FSI) is a provincial not-for-profit society committed to supporting families who have a family member with a disability.\nFSI is unique in Canada and the only grassroots family to family organization that has a broad volunteer base.\nFSI SUPPORTS AND SERVICES ARE FREE TO ANY FAMILY \n*FG

I bring 9 years combined experience working with adults with developmental disabilities and children with complex trauma needs. I started at MNBC this year and I’ve been very happy gaining as much knowledge as I can about my culture and heritage so I can bring these teachings to my young daughter. I live and work on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Semiahmoo\, Katzie\, Kwikwetlem\, Kwantlen\, Qayqayt and Tsawwassen First Nations. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \nFamily Support Institute of BC (FSI) is a provincial not-for-profit society committed to supporting families who have a family member with a disability.\nFSI is unique in Canada and the only grass roots family to family organization that has a broad volunteer base. \nFSI SUPPORTS AND SERVICES ARE FREE TO ANY FAMILY \nYou are invited to join FSI CONTINUING CONVERSATIONS\, a private Facebook Group intended to continue conversations of support or provide an alternative platform for support. www.facebook.com/groups/fsicontinuingconversations/ \nAll FSI Zoom sessions can be accessed by telephone only if access to computers and/or internet is a barrier.
