SUMMARY:Unloved: Huronia's Forgotten Children
DESCRIPTION:SESSION INFO: « Back to all events \nFilmmaker Barri Cohen knew her immediate family to consist of her parents\, two brothers and half-sister. But one day\, her father revealed the existence of two more siblings\, who were dropped off as toddlers at a now-closed hospital and home for children with developmental disabilities. \nIn the wake of a successful class-action lawsuit\, Cohen is finally able “to peel back the half-truths and secrets” around her two now-deceased siblings. Speaking to the families and survivors of the Centre\, she pieces together the story of her brothers’ lives through shocking stories of abuse\, humiliation and trauma. But these interviews also provide hope and light\, as the survivors support each other in their battle for recognition and healing. \nOnline streaming is available for five days starting on May 4 at 9:00am. Single tickets are on sale now!

Mainstream and disability arts organizations\, allies\, caregivers\, and others interested in envisioning a better arts/culture sector for artists with developmental disabilities are also welcome to take part in this important conversation. \nThis national conversation will be: \n\n\nAn opportunity for artists living with a developmental disability to share their stories\, listen to fellow artists with disabilities\, and interact with delegates from the disability sector and the mainstream arts/culture sector – with the goal of helping to envision an arts/culture world that will provide equitable opportunities for artists with developmental disabilities. \n\n\nAn opportunity for caregivers and the disability sector to also do the same and see what roles they can play to support artists living with disabilities. \n\n\nAn opportunity for disability- and mainstream arts professionals to gain new perspectives\, hearing from firsthand accounts of artists living with disabilities and from our speakers and panelists. \n\n\nAn opportunity for arts funders\, administrators\, and leaders from the arts/culture sector to hear these perspectives and identify ways they can explore to support artists living with disabilities. \n\n\nTaking place across Vancouver and Banff\, we are planning in-person and virtual sessions that will ensure as much accessibility for participants.
