What is Natural Authority?

April 14 2025 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am PDT

Purpose: To support and look after vulnerable people with a disability without abusing or mistreating them. This is highly important but easily gets underestimated, overlooked or ignored. In this presentation you will learn the following in a simple and clear manner:

  1. The meaning and importance of “natural authority”.
  2. Introduction to the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC (PGT), and what they do to support vulnerable people, which is closely connected to “natural authority”.
  3. Introduction to 12 PGT legal decision making tools, starting with the least intrusive to the most intrusive options. These tools can get easily misunderstood and misused when people are not accurately informed.

Angela Clancy has served as the Executive Director of the Family Support Institute of BC (FSIBC) for over 24 years. In this role, she has drawn on her extensive experience and education to support families navigating the complex challenges associated with having a family member with a disability. Angela is recognized for her expertise in trauma-informed practices and culturally responsive supports, ensuring that FSIBC’s initiatives are inclusive and reflective of the diverse communities it serves. Angela’s leadership is deeply rooted in her personal experiences growing up alongside her brother, Alan, who requires lifelong supports due to disabilities.
