In this second session of our series on Navigating Education in the BC K-12 system, Veena Birring Hayer from Provincial Outreach Program for Autism & Related Disorders (POPARD) will explain what Competency-based IEPs are and how to create them to reflect your child’s strengths and support needs.
The Individual Education Plan (IEP) is a cornerstone of inclusive education, supporting students with disabilities and diverse learning needs across British Columbia. This workshop offers a clear and practical introduction to the Competency-Based Individual Education Plan (CB-IEP), an approach grounded in inclusion, student voice, and responsive, strengths-based planning.
Participants will deepen their understanding of how CB-IEPs align with BC’s redesigned curriculum and reflect a shift toward meaningful, individualized learning goals that honour each student’s unique abilities and lived experience.
This workshop will include:
-
- A brief overview of BC’s redesigned curriculum as related to competency-based IEPs
- An exploration of the evolution of IEP frameworks across BC school districts and the rationale for the current competency-based approach
- Clarification of the roles and shared responsibilities of school teams, parents/caregivers, and students in CB-IEP development
- Practical strategies and resources to support meaningful parent/caregiver engagement in IEP planning
- A walk-through example of developing a Competency-Based IEP from start to finish
